Already in the title verse, Saint Mark made a reference to creation. In Genesis, the Spirit of God hovers above the waters (Genesis 1:2), and now that Spirit descends on Jesus like a dove. Although symbolic use of the dove was widespread in classical literature and the subsequent Christian era, the connection between the Spirit and the dove as in Mark’s description of the baptism of Jesus is new.
